Meet our Board of Directors

Cheryl Herder, President

Joining the Compass board of directors in 2019 was an easy decision for me. Throughout my career in the field of Early Childhood Education, I have seen first-hand the passionate and dedicated professionals that consistently reflect the outstanding organization that Compass has grown to be.  I value trusting relationships, equal worth, accountability, collective intelligence, and lifelong learning which are synonymous with the way that Compass approaches everything it does. I am honoured to partner with Compass and the Board of Directors, as we continue to evolve, imagining and reimagining a better future for children, families, colleagues, and the greater community.

Virginia Marini, Vice-President

I have been passionate about early childhood education since my Ryerson ECE days. Now as a retired educator I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to Compass ELC and support children, parents and educators.

Doug Lytle, Treasurer

I joined the board when my children were small and attending Compass (then KCCS) day-cares. We experienced: home care, rural centre-based care, and urban centre-based care with the organization and were always impressed with the quality of care our kids received and how we were made to feel as part of the family. When the opportunity arose to be a part of that drive to quality, I joined the board. It has been my privilege to watch the growth and never-ending improvement of this organization as a Director and Treasurer with Compass ELC.

Jon Gillan, Secretary

What I love most about Compass ELC and what attracted me to the Board was that the child-centred values that are continuously refined and re-expressed run all throughout the entire organization. Values inform every aspect of how the organization operates from budgeting to programming to strategic planning and organizational structure, and I have witnessed how this approach enhances both the work and learning environments.

Amy Shawanda, Director

I became a member of the CELC Board of Directors because it has been a wonderful and welcoming place for my children.

Additionally, I wanted to contribute to the Board’s diversification by adding Indigenous representatives and help with the exchange of Indigenous pedagogies.

Rachel Mahoney, Director

As a working mother with two children under the age of five, early learning and care is incredibly important to me and my family. I am passionate about children, my community, making a difference and about Compass ELC.

Noah Beach, Director

I joined the Board of Directors at Compass Early Learning Centre to help structure early learning, care, and play within my community; for both current and future generations.

Meghan MacLean, Director

As a Compass ELC parent, I’ve witnessed my child grow and thrive in this program. Joining the Board is a way to continue to give back and serve an exceptional organization that embraces learning and exploration, connections, and diversity.

Steve Elford, Director

My children have been blessed to be a part of the Compass ELC family. My hope is to give back to this wonderful organization by providing a parent’s perspective on Board decisions so that other families will continue to experience these blessings.
