Below is a list of terms and concepts that the EIC Training primarily focuses on. If you would like to review Compass ELC’s full Glossary, click here. The Glossary can also be accessed on pg. 8 of the Staff Handbook.
Intersectionality
Intersectionality is the idea that people can experience discrimination or disadvantage in more than one way at the same time — for example, because of their race, gender, disability, class, or other identities. These overlapping experiences can create unique challenges that aren’t always visible when looking at each identity separately.
Bias and Privilege
Bias: A preconceived judgment that is held by a person and that influences their perception of or their behaviour towards another person or group of people.
Privilege: Refers to unearned advantages or benefits that individuals receive simply because of their membership in a dominant or favored social group—such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, or ability. It’s rooted in historical and systemic power structures, and often goes unnoticed by those who have it.
Microaggressions
A comment or action that is regarded as subtly expressing prejudice against a person or group of people.
Equality vs Equity
Equality: The principle of treating everyone in the same manner by ensuring they have access to the same resources and opportunities. Equality does not necessarily lead to fair outcomes since it does not consider people’s unique experiences and differing situations.
Equity: Equity means treating people fairly by recognizing and addressing past and present inequalities. It may involve special steps to support those who have faced discrimination or disadvantage, so that everyone has a fair chance at success. Equity is the process that helps us reach equality in outcomes.
Bystander Intervention / Bravery
Refers to the actions taken by individuals who witness a problematic situation and choose to intervene to prevent escalation or harm. It encourages witnesses to actively engage in situation they deem problematic.
