Compass Forest and Nature Programs

Forest and Nature Program Vision

Compass ELC believes children deserve the freedom to connect with nature and gain an understanding of their role in the ecosystem as well as the positive impact nature has on wellbeing and mental health.

Our Forest and Nature programs offer children of all ages year-round opportunities to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of local forests, parks and trail systems in partnership with Kawartha Land Trust.  We remain committed to our journey towards truth and reconciliation by learning, unlearning and thinking intentionally about the actions each of us can take to respect Indigenous knowledge, ways of being and advocate for change.

Each program seeks to foster ecological identity by intentionally offering child-led, unstructured time to deepen their relationship with nature and each other. We deeply believe in the importance of nurturing a child’s reciprocal relationship with nature.

We have ways of being which are important to us while in our programs;

  • Respect for yourself – Children are encouraged to take care of their physical well-being while in program. This includes autonomy, reading their own body cues, understanding their limits, holding space for all emotions and communicating personal boundaries.
  • Respect for Nature – The land is our teacher. We offer unstructured time for children to develop a reciprocal relationship with nature and the understanding that they are an equal part of the ecosystem. How can we lessen our impact?
  • Respect for others – Children build trusting relationships with peers; they listen to understand and respect each other’s personal boundaries.

Forest Friends

Ages 0-4
Parent and Child Program

Program Details

Forest Friends is a program for parents and their children. This program is offered in natural spaces easily accessible in your community. You will come together with other families to deepen your relationship with nature alongside your child(ren.) This program is designed to promote wellbeing and interconnection between caregivers, children and the ecosystem. An outdoor facilitator will offer the group provocations that will challenge you to slow down, connect with nature and embrace adventurous play. As you foster your ecological identity with your child you will also build trusting relationships with each other and other families. Everyone will gain an understanding of the benefits of shared outdoor experiences that foster reciprocal relationships with our ecosystem. We will address our nature bias and deficit, our personal barriers and encourage each other to get outside.

Ballyduff (Pontypool)
851 Ballyduff Road, Pontypool, ON
On 2022, Ralph and Jean Garsonnin generously donated ~150 acres of their property, the section containing the Ballyduff Trail network, to Kawartha Land Trust. The remaining property will continue to be protected through a CEA. They have worked with community groups and volunteers to re-establish woodlots, planted thousands of trees to create forests, managed invasive species and developed 10km of recreational trails that are open to the public. There has also been a restoration of a native tallgrass prairie ecosystem over the last 15 years. This prairie is the best example and opportunity of restoration on any Kawartha Land Trust property.

Dance Nature Sanctuary (Youngs Point)
2027 Preston Rd, Lakefield, ON
This property was generously donated to Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) in 2006 by Dr. Alice Sharpe. It anchors KLT’s Moore Lake Focus Area.  A wide variety of plants grow on this property and its wildlife habitat, including fields, forests, marshes and swamps, are home to many different animal species, including White-tailed Deer, Wild Turkey, Fisher, Beaver, Porcupine, Red Squirrel, Evening Grosbeak, and many more.

Our goal with our outdoor initiative is to nurture relationships with nature by providing child-led and inquiry-driven encounters and we believe in making this a financially accessible program for all.

We are working with our municipal partners in the hopes of being able to provide access to subsidy for future programs, however since this process had not yet been finalized, if fees for the Forest and Nature program cause a financial hardship, please reach out HERE and we will find a solution together.
