Welcome to the Neighbourhood at 553 Bonaccord Street

As your neighbour, we would like to introduce ourselves and  tell you a few things about who we are. The Janet Castle child care program is part of Compass Early Learning and Care, a non-profit organization. We have infant, toddler and preschool classrooms providing care to children ranging from a few weeks to four years old. We offer child-centred emergent and inquiry-based learning. Educators work in the cycle of inquiry; observing children, taking notes and pictures, then reflecting and collaborating together to unpack the meaning, and responding by offering provocations to scaffold the children’s learning. We play outside in all weather, and walk to community parks and gardens because we know that children deserve experiences outside of the classroom to connect and learn about the world around them. Children are capable and competent, and by offering them opportunities to take risks they gain an understanding of their limitations and learn to use their judgment to determine what is safe. We encourage children to explore their identity and talk openly about differences within race and similarities across cultures. We are on a journey of self reflection, working to become conscious of our own biases, and thinking together about inclusion and equity in our program. We are committed to embedding anti-racism into all of our work. We are grateful for this incredible, diverse community and we are happy you are here as neighbours.
